Wan Hung AW16 Collection

The very many experiences I've had with fashion all surround one very idea - relatibility. It's the very reason why people develop a sense of style which they feel comfortable with. Because without it, how would we connect with the clothing and develop emotions?

In my short 4-day runabout in discovering talent at London Collections Men earlier this year in January, I had the chance to visit the designer showrooms to meet designers and learn more about several brands. My body naturally gravitated towards the rails of Wan Hung for its colours. A collection that's blindingly blue and red, from a distance, and complete with 3D objects. If he were asked to describe his designs in words, bold would be one of them and for the right reasons - Wan Hung has been selected to last year to showcase his work at a Lane Crawford x Swarovski “Visions From A New Generation” exhibition. And similar designs have been incorporated into more sporty designs such as the slip-ons in this collection.

Wan Hung found his label shortly after his graduation from Central Saint Martins with a BA in fashion print. Often stating that he knew he wanted to work in fashion at the age of 12, his portfolio is impressive. Wan Hung has worked for designers such as John Rocha, Simone Rocha and Bernhard Willhelm, and he cites Tom Ford as his largest inspiration for his interest in creating menswear.

In breaking down Wan Hung as a brand, I do find it relatible. Wan Hung's label is two years old, and so is The Bold Concept; his brand first showcased in London Collections Men in 2015, and that was the same year I started supporting designers in London. Of course, what we do is very different but I found his interview on his previous AW15 collection as a great introduction to his brand. As a relatively new brand, there's a lot to think about in terms of experimenting and presenting the direction to an audience. It takes time to develop a brand and Wan Hung insists on creating menswear garments that are as interesting as womenswear. His focus on textiles is evident from the cashmere roll neck sweaters to the hand-woven scarf. Modern and multi-functional.
